"Come now, keep up, we really should reach our destination as soon as possible."
"Of course, my Lord." Simon replied, staying in line behind his master, Sir Barbaras.
"Good, good. Once the job is done, your training will continue. Although, I would say, this should be considered a valuable lesson." Sir Barbaras stated in his galant and smooth voice.
Simon repeated his former answer and made sure his pony didn't step out of line. It was important that he did not take the word from his master and he should stay in place right behind him, at least while they were still in the city. It was a significant show of rank and humility and it was highly expected of him to know his place. He had learned this during his pagehood, since he was sent to Raphoe by his father as a 7 year old boy with hopes of becoming a knight. Back then, when he didn't know of the hours of training and studying, he thought that knights just rode around and rescued damsels and slayed dragons. That all changed during his years of pagehood.
He had been assigned to Sir Barbaras when he was 16, which was actually quite late, but no knights had been able to take him as their squire until that point. He had now been through most of his training, and it was mainly the physical training with weapons that needed satisfaction. As they rode through the streets of Raphoe, Simon thought of the days of study, memorizing standards and coats of arms, along with the days of practising how to act in delicate company, such as banquets. Ah yes, his training had been a long one, but at least he would soon complete it, and realize his most intense dream. Becoming knighted.
"My Lord, you still haven't told me where we are going?" Simon partly asked, partly stated in an inquisitive tone.
"All in good time, my impatient squire. Patience is a virtue, you will discover where we are going in due time." Sir Barbaras replied with a curled smile on his lips, not that Simon could see it.
"Of course, my Lord. Forgive my impatience, I should not have rushed the matter."
"Well, curiosity is of importance as well. If you do not wish to learn, then you will not." Sir Barbaras said in a friendly tone, still with his mysterious smile. Simon just kept his face neutral, but smiled on the inside. He knew he'd gotten the best knight to serve, Sir Barbaras was not just a very skillfull and powerful knight, he was also polite and kind as a man. The perfect knight, in Simon's eyes.
They soon arrived at the Palace gates, with more than a dozen guards eyeing them. However, the sergeant knew Sir Barbaras and he had seen Simon many times before, and of course it was obvious that Sir Barbaras was a knight, what with all the armour and weaponry, and so there were no problems.
"Good day to you, my good sergeant. Is life treating you well?" Sir Barbaras asked in his ever-polite tone.
"I would say so, I would. Just got a pretty raise, and we've finally gotten a few more guards here. You know we've been understaffed for weeks, with all the warriors and scruffs coming in, lately." the sergeant replied, grasping a clipboard and a pen. "Well, to the business at hand. Are you coming back and when do you expect that to be?"
"I'm afraid I do not yet know when we will be back. But we will, probability tells me within a few days as a loft." Sir Barbaras said, twirling his finely curved moustache as he spoke.
"Uh huh.. That'll be fine, take care Sir, and you too Simon." the sergeant said, after scribbling down what the knight had told him. He laid the clipboard and pen to rest and then gave orders to let the knight and squire through. He dutily saluted the knight as he rode through, and both Sir Barbaras and Simon returned the salute, Sir Barbaras with a smile, and Simon with his neutral face.
